How our Soapstone Products are made?

Our Fair Trade Soapstone Products are completely handmade. They are made by a large team of nearly 500 skilled craftspeople in Tabaka, Kisii County, in south western Kenya. By purchasing these products, you help create a sustainable income for many families who are very proud to make these beautiful products.

The products are natural, zero plastic, and handmade using simple masonry tools. Handmade Soapstone products have less than 1% environmental impact from production and disposal compared to non-recyclable plastic or resin products.

The soapstone products pass through a long production process:

Tabaka quarry

First the raw soapstone is mined from the quarry near Tabaka by hand. Soapstone is found near to the surface so is easy to mine.

Tabaka sawing stone

The soapstone is then cut into manageable blocks. Soapstone is very easy to cut initially, whilst it remains moist, it is then left in the sun and as it dries it becomes much harder. Here, Robert Ongesa, is sawing the Soapstone into blocks.

Tabaka small carving place

The Soapstone is then carved into the rough shape of the product. Soapstone varies in colour from white to rose and even grey and yellow and will have beautiful natural colourings and marks that appear in the stone.

Tabaka curving a disc candle holder

The Soapstone is then carved by skilled craftspeople into the shape of the desired product.

Ronald Nyabwari one of our carvers

Carvers work in small groups with each group specialising in certain carvings. Here Ronald Nyabwari who specialises in carving animals is carving a cat.

Sandpapering of products

The carved shapes are then sanded by another team. Opportunities are given equally to men and women in the village and all craftspeople are helped to set up bank accounts and a requirement is they must send their children to school if they wish to be involved in the project.

Richard Kerina

The soapstone is then coloured with a natural dye before a skilled team of craftspeople etch the patterns revealing the natural colour of the soapstone with a sharp knife. Here Richard Kerina is etching a floral pattern on a heart.

Last quality control

Finally, the products are polished with a natural wax before the beautiful finished product is carefully quality controlled by the team. The products are then wrapped in paper and boxed. No plastic is used in production or packaging.

How our Fair Trade Recycled Aluminium Bowls and Coasters are made

There are many individual stages in making these completely handmade recycled aluminium bowls and coasters and the beauty and exceptional quality and finish of these products is due to the skill and care taken by the artisans during each stage of the process.

Stage 1 - Sand Casting the shape of the product
The recycled aluminium is melted down in a charcoal fire pit. A sand mould in the shape of the product is then prepared before the melted aluminium is poured in the sand cast. The coolness of the sand solidifies the aluminium almost instantly and the shape of the bowl is formed.Sand Casting the shape of the product
Stage 2 - Rough polishing
The products are rough polished by teams of artisans using grinding belts and then cleaned and checked by a further team.
Rough polishing
Stage 3 - Colour and Images
The food safe colour is then applied to the products by the handicraft makers before the images are added to the bowls and coasters.
Stage 4 - Enamelling
Food safe enamel is then smoothly and equally applied over the image by hand by very skilled artisans.
Enamelling
Stage 5 - Final polishing
A team of handicraft makers then give the products a final polish.

Stage 6 - Quality checking, labelling, bar coding, tagging, wrapping and boxing
A further team go through stringent quality control of each product before it is given a further clean, bar coded, tagged, labelled and wrapped in tissue paper before it is placed in its individual presentation box.

Trashy Bags helping to save the Planet

trashy bag groupWe are very excited about our new range of recycled trashy bags from Ghana. They are made from recycled water sachets, which contain fresh drinking water and are then discarded on the streets in Ghana. We decided to add these fantastic bags to our ranges as we all here at Tilnar Art have a strong environmental ethos and are passionate about saving our planet, especially from the amount of plastic waste that goes into the sea and food chain.

Tilnar Art seeks to minimise our impact on the environment.   We do not air freight any of our products and transport all of our products by sea to reduce the carbon footprint of our products.

These Trashy Bags are handmade and Fair Trade from Ghana. It is estimated that in Ghana, waste produced from plastic packaging amounts to 270 tonnes per day leading to pollution of the streets, beaches and seas.

akoma with trashy bagThese Trashy Bags help to reduce this pollution as the reclaimed plastic drinking water and ice-cream sachets are not reprocessed in any way apart from cleaning and are then upcycled to make the fantastic Fair Trade Recycled Bags. This has the benefit that very little energy is used in order to add value to material that would otherwise end up polluting our environment.

The recycled trashy backpack will be the must have environmentally friendly fashion accessory and are exclusive to Tilnar Art in UK!

We are hoping that the purchases of these stylish and high quality waterproof recycled bags for life will help save the environment one bag at a time.

All of our ranges are Fair Trade and handmade and our aim is to buy high quality, ethically sourced and environmentally friendly products from disadvantaged producers from across the developing world in order to help people trade out of poverty.

Tilnar Art predominantly buys from primary producers. We make advance payments for materials, to help our suppliers buy raw materials and this ensures that producers do not have to take on debts in order to complete our orders.  We try to order regularly from each producer to maintain continuity of demand and we pay for all orders once the goods are ready in their countries of origin.

Tilnar Art’s RSPB British Bird Collection Video Tour

Tilnar Art is very proud to announce its link up with the RSPB. Tilnar Art has developed and launched an expanded range of RSPB branded British metal birds. Tom Hawes, the MD of Tilnar Art commented: “We are very excited at being an RSPB licensee. We feel the RSPB is the perfect partner for our metal bird range, because customers who like our bird products, naturally support the RSPB. The expanded RSPB collection is already proving very popular with our retailers and looks like becoming a best seller”.

The stunning sculptures in the metal bird range are hand-made by a group of artists from Zimbabwe. All the sculptures come with an informative RSPB branded product tag, with pictures of the artists and details of how the products are made. The products in the new RSPB collection range from herons, to red robins, from ducks to avocets which are the RSPB’s symbol. All the income received by RSPB in relation to the sales of these products will directly help the RSPB with their work in inspiring everyone to give nature a home and protecting threatened birds and wildlife so our towns and countryside teem with life once again.

The products are Fair Trade and purchases of these sculptures help provide a stable income and good standard of living for the artists and their families. The reclaimed metal is heated and once hot and malleable is individually crafted to produce these fabulous sculptures, which are then finished with a varnish. Many of these sculptures are displayed in gardens and it is recommended a yearly coat of boat varnish is applied to maintain the sculptures excellent condition if they are placed outside.

As each sculpture is individually made, each will be unique with its own markings and poses and will make the perfect addition to any home or garden.
